REPORTS TO: Director of Product Management

SITE LOCATION: West Henrietta, NY

IDEX Health & Science – based in Rochester, New York –IDEX Health & Science’s line of products is comprised of a Light Sources Group and an Optical Systems Group. The Light Sources Group manufactures a variety of visible, low to moderate power lasers and laser-based systems uniquely designed for consistent performance. The Light Sources Group offers three basic types of lasers: gas (helium-neon and ion lasers), diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers, and semiconductor diode laser assemblies. The Optical Systems Group provides the design, prototype and low to mid volume manufacturing of custom lens assemblies and optical systems. The Optical Systems Group also specializes in the design of reliable shutter mechanisms and assemblies


The Product Manager will drive sustained growth and profitability of the product line by serving as the subject matter expert on the market problem, customer application, and competition of the product portfolio. Moreover, the Product Manager will work together with our sales, marketing, and RD&E teams to support awareness, nurture and establish relationships, and ultimately put IDEX Health & Science in a position to contribute to our customers’ instrument and consumables development projects.


Product Line Strategy: Develop and implement a strategic plan to drive profitable growth and product vitality. Collaborate with customers, operations, sales, RD&E, and market development to identify and articulate opportunities to stakeholders.

Product Lifecycle Management: Champion all phases (from new product through obsolescence) of the product life cycle with an 8020 mindset.

Project Champion: Engage with sales, customers, and RD&E teams on high profile OEM projects. Successful vetting of opportunities, negotiation of terms, and the winning & completion of impactful projects through our phase gated product development process.

Market Research: Perform qualitative and quantitative market research to define segmentation, needs, and competitive landscape. Execute and document win/loss analysis to inform the product roadmap.

Product Development: Define product concept through the development of customer requirement documents (CRD), product requirement documents (PRD), and product specification documents (PSD).

Win/Loss: Execute, document, and monitor win/loss information understand why recent evaluators of the product did or did not buy, what steps they took in the buying process, and how we should evolve our selling process and product offering.

Pricing Excellence: Develop and implement product pricing strategies to maximize contribution margin dollars.

Commercial Support: Develop and deliver positioning documents, educational content, product training, sales tools, and application specific targeting strategies to enable the sales team.

Planning: Support weekly and monthly revenue forecasting and the development of an annual revenue plan.


  • Experience in developing or commercializing products that serve end users and OEM partners in the life sciences and in-vitro diagnostics end market is a plus. Product categories include sequencing, spatial biology, chromatography, bioprocessing, hematology, clinical chemistry, immunoassays, mass spec, PCR, FISH, IHC, and other emerging categories in cellomics, proteomics, and genomics.

  • Strong knowledge of optical components (filters and/or lenses) and optical systems that can be applied to create a compelling product roadmap that inspires the organization to execute.

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience. Has taken a new product (not a line extension) from product concept through launch.

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree. An advanced degree (MBA or technical) is a plus.

  • Willing to travel approximately 30% of time.

  • Able to lift 35 pounds, assist Marketing to set up trade show booths.

  • Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously, by phone, in person, and other electronic media.

  • Visual acuity needed for close detail work and computer use.

  • Must be willing to travel via plane/car/train as required. Able to travel internationally.


  • General office and field environment.

  • Must be able to travel approximately 30% of the time. Must be comfortable traveling in geographic locations where customs and cultures are unfamiliar.
