At IDEX Health & Science, you have the opportunity to work with a great group of people, mentor others, and build a great future.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

The LSO group is currently looking for a talented engineer (Engineer, Senior, Lead, or Principal level based on experience and education) to join its seasoned RD&E team. This is a critical engineering role having both wide ranging technical needs as well as requiring deep subject matter knowledge in areas of specialty. This role would have a heavy emphasis in optical design and analysis. Input will inform component and system decisions. System work involves optics, opto-mechanics, and electro-optics. Interfaces directly with external customers and leads problem solving efforts and communicates solutions to the customer. Works on projects visible to management and aligns project goals with company goals while maintaining strict optical performance parameters. Maintains relationships across departments to better execute projects, often as a team lead. A Lead or Principal level engineer, works with a general direction from supervisor but is largely an independent technical leader.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Lens design of complex multi-element lenses, using design software such as Zemax, CodeV, or similar.

  • Generate lens requirements, coating requirements, and optical system requirements from customer interactions and documents. Do so in a manner consistent with IDEX business principles, which may involve proprietary and yet collaborative solutions co-developed with customers.

  • Provide accurate and detailed requirements documentation for procurement and fabrication of optical components. Provide accurate test requirements either by following established protocols or creating new standards to support the design and verification of test fixtures.

  • Interface with opto-mechanical and CAD designers to define tooling, optical mounting, and human interface requirements based on predicted worst-case optical tolerances.

  • Assess successful vs. sub-optimal implementations of light sources, imaging optics, precision mechanics, motion control, image processing, and other key sub-systems and technologies, and recommend improvements to internal and external customers.

  • Quickly generate feasibility studies to provide optical solutions in support of project bids.

  • Occasionally to frequently mentor less experienced personnel or train direct labor staff.

  • Makes recommendations to Director and Program Managers for project resource needs and timelines, related to staffing, materials, schedules, and budgets.

  • Leads regular technical meetings with customers and internal staff at multiple sites.

  • Work with a team-first thought process.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor or Master’s degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline and 2+ years’ experience in a directly related field of modern optical lens design and manufacturing, or a PhD in Optics.

  • For Senior through Principal positions a Master’s degree or PhD in Optics and 5+ years’ experience in a directly related field.

  • Proficient with one or more optical design software packages such as CodeV or Zemax (preferred), or another ray tracing program.

  • Tolerancing for precision optics manufacturing of high-volume optics and opto-mechanics.

  • History of taking complex lens designs into volume production, is a large plus.

  • Understanding of precision alignment & metrology techniques, e.g. interferometry and beam alignment.

  • Ability to explain optics-related issues to non-optical or non-technical persons.

  • Ability to work with test technicians to develop and debug test procedures.

  • Working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment such as MTF benches, interferometers and photometers, and able to specify such equipment.

  • Direct experience in the specification and testing of optical based integrated systems.

  • Non-sequential analysis or illumination experience is a plus.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Mastery of first order optics and aberration theory.

  • Proficiency in Matlab, Python, C#, Visual Basic, or other software languages is desirable. Minimally the ability to create macros to automate repetitive tasks and data collection is necessary.

  • Hands-on laboratory skills for assembly, alignment, calibration, and evaluation of optical systems.

  • Hands-on lab experience testing precision optics and opto-mechanics.

  • Hands on experience with sensors and the accompanying software control and electronic outputs.

  • Ability to operate in a multi-tasking environment and with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently toward project goals with only occasional guidance.

  • Attention to detail. Demonstrate persistence in identifying the cause of unusual results.

  • Ability to write technical reports in concise and accurate English, and present the results orally as required.

  • Present interim project findings in pictorial & table form to non-Optics teams on a frequent basis.

  • Experience in the specifications and parameters of optical filters.

  • Experience in the specification or design of motion control systems, such as fast-focus modules.

  • Ability to layout mechanical arrangements for optical testing, possibly in CAD is a plus.

  • General knowledge of operations, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems.

  • This position is a site-based role, with occasional remote work or travel likely.
