The LSO group is currently looking for a talented engineer (Engineer, Senior, Lead, or Principal level based on experience and education) to join its seasoned RD&E team. This role is responsible for leading the mechanical design and validation of high precision opto-mechanical systems. As part of the RD&E team, this position will work with members of the mechanical, optical, and manufacturing engineering groups to provide mechanical feedback at all stages of the design and manufacturing process. Key responsibilities will include establishing the mechanical architecture of new system designs and ensuring all sub-modules comply with the overall system-level tolerances necessary to meet system performance specifications. In addition to performance and reliability, emphasis will also be placed on DFX efforts throughout the design process. Support for these systems will extend throughout the prototype phase and include migration to the manufacturing team. Individuals at a Lead or Principal level engineer will work with a general direction from supervisor but are largely independent technical leaders.


  • Lead engineering efforts pertaining to the design of precision opto-mechanical systems.

  • Collaborate with optical designers to provide feedback on mechanical viability of designs. Translate output from optical design software into manufacturable components.

  • Analyze and assign mechanical tolerances, incorporating manufacturing and optical considerations. Collaborate with Quality team to determine inspection procedures for critical components.

  • Generate complete engineering fabrication documentation & bill of materials.

  • Support mechanical designs through manufacturing, assembly, and test. Work with assembly and test technicians to develop and debug procedures in a clean room environment.

  • Communicate effectively through email, presentations, and technical documents. Lead regular technical meetings with customers and internal staff at multiple sites.

  • Supports company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions.


  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline and 2+ years in a directly related field of mechanical design and manufacturing, or a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.

  • For Senior, Lead, and Principal positions, a Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering and 5+ years’ experience in a directly related field.

  • For Lead and Principal positions, 5+ years experience leading engineering design and/or manufacturing initiatives.

  • High level of proficiency in Solidworks or a similar mechanical CAD software.

  • Hands-on experience implementing opto-mechanical system design concepts and aligning optical systems.

  • Successful completion of DFMEA’s and implementation of DFM and DFC principles.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T per ISO standards.

  • Familiarity with kinematic mounting schemes and exact constraint principles.

  • Working knowledge of FEA (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, etc.)

  • Creation of technical reports and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences.


  • Understanding of basic machining and fabrication processes. Hands-on experience in a machine shop or similar environment is a plus.

  • Laboratory or clean room experience constructing, aligning, and debugging optical systems. Focus on optomechanical mounts and fixturing.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or a similar programing language is desirable. Specific applications of interest include interfacing with motion and data collection systems, basic task automation, and data analysis.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks both of similar and varying priority.

  • General knowledge of operations, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems.

  • This position is a site-based role, with occasional remote work or travel likely.
