The Lead Buyer will perform and manage the buying function for assigned vendors and assure continuous supply of assigned components across diversified commodities to maintain required levels of material to support production requirements at optimum cost while ensuring materials meet or exceed company quality requirements.

Essential Functions

  • Establishes and maintains good vendor relationships

  • Identifies and develops suppliers to provide greatest total cost benefits

  • Monitors open purchase orders to ensure on-time delivery and working capital targets can be achieved

  • Monitors supplier delivery, quality and customer service performance and develop and track improvement plans when necessary including the issuance of supplier scorecards

  • Contact suppliers for expedites, quality issues, past due shipments, and stock-outs

  • Ensure timely order and receipt of material to support production planners

  • Periodic review of reorder points and stocking levels for all inventory items in a structured manner to ensure appropriateness

  • Use MRP (Materials Requirements Planning) to maintain proper inventory levels

  • Maintain MRP data within the JD Edwards system

  • Anticipate potential replenishment issues by utilizing reports and other demand planning tools in a disciplined and timely manner

  • Ensure proper execution of procedures and all related activities when issuing purchase orders including, but not limited to, obtaining required approvals, resolving discrepancies with suppliers, managing non-conforming materials, etc.

  • Manage continuous improvement of inventory turns and dollars on hand

  • Ensure all purchase orders contain the proper terms and conditions when purchasing materials and/or services

  • Ensure proper execution of procedures related to scrapping material and debit memo process

  • Negotiate price and terms and conditions with suppliers to minimize total cost

  • Contract Management – includes supplier negotiation of inventory replenishment method (e.g. Kanban, consignment, point of use).

  • Conducts value analysis and obtains competitive bids whenever possible

  • Track and control inbound freight costs to ensure total cost meets or exceeds expectations and advise management of exceptions

  • Performs other duties as required

  • Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company

  • Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description, and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output

  • Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety to self and co-workers

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree with one (3) years purchasing / material management experience in manufacturing environment. Experience accepted in lieu of education

Working knowledge of ERP/MRP with JD Edwards

Preferred Education and Experience

Three (5) – Five (7) years of related buying experience

Supervisory Responsibility


Work Environment

Exposure to manufacturing environment. Noise level may vary from moderate office environment to noisy/loud in the plant area. Proper use of safety equipment such as steel-toed shoes, goggles, safety glasses, gloves, apron and face shield must be observed.
