Scope of Role: Responsible for the continuous improvement, lean value stream process support, and maintenance of manufacturing processes to maximize productivity while minimizing costs. Act in a leadership role within the Engineering Department and serve as a technical expert within Operations and with skilled trades. Develop cross functional teams to address organizational wide continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining positive employee relations, team oriented problem solving and employee accountability.

Duties and Responsibility:

  • Acts in a leadership role in the engineering and skilled trades department by allocating work, assigning deadlines, reviewing progress, leading process FMEA’s and providing input as required.

  • Advances and maintains manufacturing work instructions associated with the product including assembly, final assembly, paint and test and special processes. Assist in the training and evaluation when applicable

  • Assist in the development of advanced manufacturing processes. Assigned strategic investigations to support long range manufacturing development.

  • Coordinates manufacturing process changes resulting from Engineering Change Notices or new product implementation which includes tooling, fixtures, gages, CNC programs, packaging and routings.

  • Develops advanced manufacturing processes. Assigned strategic investigations to support long range manufacturing development.

  • Has excellent knowledge of metal cutting equipment (CNC lathes, mills, etc.) Has a deep understanding of programming needs and maintenance fundamentals. Can aid in the selection of new machines, tooling, automation and processes required to meet productivity objectives.

  • Oversee the purchase of new equipment which includes the initial justification, supplier contact, studies of equipment prior to purchase and after installation, implementation and training of personnel in use of new equipment. Has excellent knowledge of metal cutting equipment (CNC lathes, mills, etc.) Has a deep understanding of programming needs and maintenance fundamentals.

  • Performs as a mentor for new manufacturing engineers and/or technicians and provides them with technical guidance and instruction on Gast internal procedures.

  • Prepares routings for new or revised parts or to reflect modifications of current manufacturing methods. Process information, cost and prototype requests as required.

  • Provides innovative cost effective solutions to manufacturing process problems utilizing lean principles. Modify cell layouts utilizing lean value stream principles. Determines and recommends improvements of accurate cell capacity and production rates.

  • Responsible for on-boarding new products into manufacturing, providing standard work, packaging and new assembly or machining processes as needed.

  • Serves as an internal manufacturing process consultant for product groups, management, and new product development engineering, marketing, and sales. Work with other departments within the corporation to ensure cost reduction efforts are being addressed, implemented and sustained.

  • Understands and applies TPM (Preventative Maintenance) to equipment and facilities. Implement and maintain Visual Factory and 5 S systems on the production floor and in support areas.

  • Understands Lean manufacturing and can manage productivity improvement projects to support rapid improvement. Responsible for the continuous improvement of process capability.

  • Develop test methods to ensure product integrity after design, process, or supplier changes.

  • Serve as primary contact for customer field complaints/requests.

  • Drives corrective action and provides customers with written reports.

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of operations experience in a manufacturing environment with increasing responsibilities.

  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience. (Six Sigma Black Belt Preferred)

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to learn and adapt to new processes are a plus.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with emphasis on cross functional team development and leading skilled trades.

  • Demonstrated project management skills.

  • Working knowledge of GD and T methodology.

  • Experience implementing Continuous Improvement and TPM programs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in machining and/or assembly operations, mix model cell structure is a plus.
